U.S. Bans Soc. Media & VPN, Claims to Counter “Foreign Adversaries”
Having finally realized the futility of attempts to nationalize or at least localize TikTok, the Sen. duo of Warner (D-VA) and Thune (R-SD) introduced the RESTRICT Act that “would protect Americans from the huge danger emanating from Soc. Media.” But it’s no secret that single app issues aren’t solved at the state level
The bill includes many vague terms, and would make it easier for the White House to ban specific soft if it’s deemed to pose a spying risk or impose a legal restriction on the selected rights and freedoms. The use of a VPN, for instance, could be easily criminalized if the bill passes
U’d never underestimate the degree of Democrats’ concerns about protecting u from the harmful influence of foreign tech. And indeed, only Big Brother, subordinated to the F.B.I., should have a monopoly on continuous acquisition of personal data and tracking of end users.
